The Story
Your trip planner is working beautifully. People describe their dream trips, upload their inspiration photos, and a few seconds later they get a gorgeous day-by-day itinerary. Word has spread. You’ve got real traffic now — dozens of people generating itineraries every day, some of them paying customers.
And then you open your AI provider’s billing page, and your stomach drops a little.
The number is bigger than you expected. Not catastrophic, but climbing fast. Every itinerary, every photo caption, every little “summarize this trip in one line” feature is making a call to an AI provider, and every one of those calls costs money. You did the napkin math: if your traffic doubles, so does your bill. If it grows ten times, you’re suddenly paying more for AI than you’re earning. That’s not a business. That’s a leak.
Here’s the part that stings. You weren’t being careless. You just told Claude Code “use AI” and it picked the most powerful, most expensive model for everything — including tiny tasks that a much cheaper model could handle perfectly. You’re paying premium prices to have a genius answer questions a smart intern could answer for a tenth of the cost.
And there’s a second problem, one that’s even more embarrassing. Every now and then, the AI returns something weird. Instead of a clean itinerary your app can display, it sends back a chatty paragraph, or a half-formatted mess, or it wraps the whole thing in an apology. Your app, which expects the answer in a very specific shape, chokes on it. The page crashes. The user sees an error. You only find out when someone complains.
So you’ve got two leaks at once. Money pouring out, and quality slipping out. This lesson is about plugging both. You’re going to learn how the pros keep their AI bills sane and their AI output reliable — and none of it requires you to understand a single line of code.
