Ship It Lesson 9 of 27

The Impatient Server

The Story

Narrated

Your trip planner is live on the internet from Lesson 8. You test it. “Barcelona, 3 days.” Works perfectly. Fast, clean, no issues.

Then you try something bigger. “Japan, 14 days, with restaurant recommendations and walking directions for each day.”

The page loads. And loads. And then shows an error. But you check the server logs and the AI was still working! It wasn’t done yet. It was in the middle of crafting day seven when the whole thing fell apart.

Your browser gave up waiting. It sent a request and heard nothing back for too long. Silence means death on the internet. The browser assumes the connection is broken and kills it. The AI needed thirty to sixty seconds to build that detailed fourteen-day itinerary, but your browser had already moved on.

This is like calling a restaurant for a takeout order, and they put you on hold. No music. No “please hold.” Just silence. After thirty seconds, you hang up and assume they’re closed. But they were actually cooking your food.

The problem isn’t that the AI is slow. The problem is that nobody told the browser to be patient.
